Dr James Weeks wins Ivors Composer Award

(10 December 2019)

Following his success in the British Composer Awards 2018, Dr James Weeks has again been successful in the re-named Ivors Academy Composer Awards 2019, winning in the Small Chamber Composition category with his string quartet Leafleoht (2018). The Ivors are the UK’s leading awards for composition.

Written for the leading Canadian new music ensemble Quatuor Bozzini, Leafleoht was premiered in Durham University’s MUSICON concert series in November 2018. It was subsequently recorded by BBC Radio 3 and broadcast in October 2019.

Receiving the award at a ceremony in the British Museum, London, on 4th December, Dr Weeks’ work was praised by the judges for sounding ‘like early music from a different universe reimagined through uncompromising writing and expressive vocal techniques, beautiful and subtle use of microtonality, and the organic timing of the work was perfect.’
