'ENGLISH OPERA FOR THE ENGLISH STAGE': STANFORD'S FIRST OPERA 'THE VEILED PROPHET'
Throughout his life Stanford aspired above all to be a successful opera composer, a desire which ultimately alluded him. It was also a genre which gave him many disappointments and false hopes. Nevertheless, he pursued a mission to see opera in England performed in English in order to be comprehensible to its audience. 'The Veiled Prophet', a grand opera inspired by Thomas Moore's 'Lalla Rhooke', was the first work to realise these aspirations. Recently performed for the first time since 1893, at the Wexford International Opera in October 2019, the opera required a new score which had to be prepared by Professor Dibble from sources in the Royal College of Music and the British Library. This seminar will recount that process and also look at the work as a major musical contribution in the late nineteenth century.
