Musicon: Indian Spring Colours | Concert 1

29th February 2020, 19:30, Department of Music, Palace Green

Apoorva Gokhale vocal
Vishwanath Shirodkar tabla
Seema Shirodkar harmonium

Our first concert features all artists visiting from India especially for this festival. Apoorva Gokhale is a rising star of the Indian music scene, who brings to the stage her own interpretation of a rich family legacy. She began her musical training at the feet of her grandfather, the legendary musician Gajananbuwa Joshi (1911-1987) and proudly represents the Gwalior gharana tradition of khyal singing with its combination of dignity, grace and lyricism.

She is accompanied by two of India's premier performers on harmonium and tabla, Seema and Vishwanath Shirodkar. The Shirodkars are much in demand in India as accompanists to the leading khyal singers, and it is a rare privilege in the UK to hear what they can bring to a khyal presentation.

The concert will comprise presentations of traditional Hindustani ragas and talas. As is traditional in this music tradition, the exact repertory is not decided in advance of the performance.

A pre-concert discussion will take place at the venue before the concert.

Tickets: £10, Students £4, Under 18s £1
