AbstractThis essay focuses on the remarkable phenomenon of remediation that Nicholas P. Wiseman's novel Fabiola, or the Church of the Catacombs, underwent during the second half of the nineteenth century in art, book illustration and early photography. It also suggests that a series of photographs now preserved in the Pontifical Commission of Sacred Archaeology in Rome were taken on the set of a now lost silent film based on the same novel.
