Poems, Songs, and Ballads in Hunter Manuscripts

21st May 2019, 13:00 to 14:00, Seminar Room 3, History Department, Gaspar Jakovac (IMEMS Library Fellow)

Desc.: Gašper will discus his ongoing work on a rather enigmatic manuscript collection of songs and verse in Hunter MS 27 (Durham Cathedral Library). The collection dates from 1630s and is clearly of local provenance. In a declaration on the front page of the wrapper, Toby Brooking, a countertenor and lay clerk of Durham Cathedral, promises to 'prick' any existing and forthcoming compositions by Abraham Coates. The music does not survive, but texts do. Who is/are the author(s) of these verses? Where they all to be set to music? And in what context would they have been performed?
