6th Wilhelm Levison Memorial Lecture: Northumbria and the Continent around the time of the Lindisfarne Gospels
In connection with the major loan exhibition of the Lindisfarne Gospels in Durham (1 July-30 September 2013), the seminar programme for 2013 explores the Lindisfarne Gospels and its world.
With topics ranging from Holy Island and the culture of contemporary Northumbria, through different aspects of the Lindisfarne Gospels itself, to the place of the manuscript within broader traditions of book culture and illumination, the series showcases new work and offers fresh perspectives on a Northumbrian masterpiece, its contexts and implications.
The Wilhelm Levison Memorial lecture series was inaugurated in 2008 in order to celebrate the scholarly vision and achievements of Professor Levison, who fled Nazi Germany with his wife in 1939 to their adopted home of Durham, where he lived until his death in 1947. Each year a speaker is invited to build upon the foundations of cross-Channel cooperation and understanding in medieval history, which Professor Levison did so much to establish.
This year our speaker is Professor Jo Story from the University of Leicester. She will be placing the Lindisfarne Gospels in their wider context, exploring the fascinating connections between Northumbria and the Continent in the late seventh and eighth centuries, in what promises to be a very interesting and engaging paper. We do hope you can join us and look forward to welcoming you to a highlight of the IMEMS’ calendar.
The lecture will be followed by a reception, and a three-course dinner in the Undercroft Restaurant at Durham Cathedral
The lecture & reception are free. The cost of the meal will be £35.
We are pleased to be able to offer six dining places for postgraduate students for a reduced price of £15: these will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.
