The Irish Tradition in Northumbria after the Synod of Whitby

5th February 2013, 17:30, Pemberton Lecture Room, PG21, Dr Clare Stancliffe, Durham University

To what extent is it possible to distinguish an Irish Christian tradition in Northumbria? If such existed, what was Wilfrid's attitude to it, and how did it fare in the decades after the break with Iona in 664? Are we to think of islands of romanitas amid a pervasive Irish-inherited Christian culture, or vice versa? Or a symbiosis? In which case, when (and where) does this begin? These are questions which I hope to address, even if some remain unanswerable.
