Vistas and views of Durham lie at the heart of much public perception and projection of the City and are a key element of the World Heritage Site’s Outstanding Universal Values. Some have remained unchanged for centuries; some of the most iconic, such as the view from the railway viaduct, are of more recent creation. Over time, development and rebuilding within the city has constantly reframed these perspectives. Some modern buildings, such as Dunelm House, both create new perspectives of the City and form part of them, as well as entering into dialogue with the Cathedral and Castle on the Peninsula. This workshop aims to enhance our understanding of the vistas and views of Durham and their significance.

We are delighted to announce the following speakers:

  • Adrian Green: Durham Castle as seen by the Learned
  • Dennis Rodwell: UNESCO, the Historic Urban Landscape initiative, and notable European conflicts past and present
  • Douglas Pocock: A City on a Hill Cannot be Hid: Durham’s World Heritage Site in View
  • Jane Gibson: Caring for Durham WHS’s Views and Vistas Today and for the Future
  • Martin Roberts: Durham Cathedral – An Object in the Landscape

For the final session of the workshop there will be a conversation with local artists. We are pleased to announce the following participants:
