Work in Progress: Cathedrals in society: cultural, political, and religious interactions in northern England, c1689-1840.
While there has been much recent scholarship on individual English cathedrals, it has tended (by definition perhaps) to be somewhat inward looking and to have a limited comparative dimension. My study, constructed around the northern province of the Church of England intends to build on this work and offer a refreshed approach to understanding the impact and importance of cathedral communities in society. The start date of 1689 marks the beginning of limited attempts at religious pluralism in England; the terminal one of c1840 the final dismantling of the post-‘Revolutionary’ order (or Ancien Régime church-state arrangements).
