(17 September 2009)

On 16 September, Ihar Rachkowski of the Belarusian State Border Committee and Saulius Stripeika of the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service signed a wide ranging border agreement in Vilnius. According to reports, this recent agreement outlines a maintenance regime for the boundary demarcation and establishes regulations concerning the movement of goods, local activities within the borderland area as well as dispute management procedures. This latest agreement follows the exchange of notes concerning demarcation of the boundary that occurred in June 2008. Demarcation began in 1998 and continued to 2006 when the last of 1,957 markers was erected along the 679 km boundary.
