Costa Rica-Nicaragua maritime dispute at the ICJ
(7 July 2017)
In ongoing proceedings at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), Costa Rica has asked the ICJ to establish maritime boundaries with Nicaragua to bring an end to the repeated border disputes with its neighbouring country.
Costa Rica has asked for boundaries to be established in both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea as well as for a determination that the Nicaraguan military base at Isla Calero is illegal as it is on territory designated to Costa Rica in a past ICJ decision.
Costa Rican ambassador Sergio Ugalde told the court that Nicaragua was seeking to justify the location of the camp with "unrealistic and exaggerated claims" that would re-draw Costa Rica's sea and land borders.
Public hearings, including Nicaragua’s response are scheduled to contine through 13 July 2017.
