Laos - Cambodia state visit amid territorial stand-off

(27 February 2017)

Lao President Bounnhang Vorachith is visiting Cambodia despite troops remaining at a stand-off over a territorial dispute over a Cambodian built road near the countries’ border.

The meeting was billed as an opportunity to ‘enhance friendship’. However Laos and Cambodia troops are massing near the Sekong River over the dispute which began on 8 February when, according to Cambodian officials, Lao soldiers crossed into Siem Pang district to demand military engineers cease work on a road that they claimed strayed into border territory not yet demarcated.
