Azerbaijani soldier killed along border with Armenia

(13 March 2015)

Azerbaijan's defence ministry reported the death of a soldier along the disputed border with Armenia. According to the ministry’s statement, the soldier was killed after “an Armenian army reconnaissance group attempted an attack on Azerbaijani positions and was repelled.”

The clash occurred in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, which has been disputed territory between Azerbaijan and Armenia since a war in the 1990s ended with a truce in 1994. Progress towards a final peace deal was threatened in 2014 after an increase in violence in the disputed region. Since January 2015, further clashes have resulted in 16 dead and 18 injured from both sides.
