(15 September 2014)
A meeting on 12 September 2014 between President Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan and President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan resulted in renewed pledges for cooperation on border security measures. They discussed measures preventing the illegal trafficking of drugs and weapons, and cooperation between the intelligence services of both countries. Both countries noted that the measures were planned to combat Islamic extremism.
The promise of cooperation comes at a moment when the US plans to reduce its forces in Afghanistan and security concerns in the region remain high.
