Computer Games: What's Really Going On?
A lecture by Hatfield's Junior Research Fellow, Dr Ladan Cockshut.
As an 'action-based medium', the digital game represents a complex engagement between the gamer, the game, and the game's algorithmic core. Inherent in this dynamic are questions of space and place, of affect, and co-production. This seminar will look at the ways in which the digital game is expressing itself through new forms of engagement and co-production. Not merely a pastime, new types of games are expecting much of their gamers. Some game designers, echoing the truest forms of citizen engagement and maker culture, are creating games built to do more than just entertain. They are engaging their gamers in a process of co-production that is providing new insights into areas of research or social justice that may otherwise have remained undiscovered. Can, and should, the digital game be more than just entertainment and play?
Dr Ladan Cockshut is a senior lecturer in computer games at Teesside University. Previously she held the role of post-doctoral research associate in the School of Applied Social Sciences at Durham University where she worked on an EPSRC-funded project researching the policing of cybercrime. She completed her PhD in 2013 in Durham's Department of Geography (and as a member of Josephine Butler College) where she researched space, sociality, and competition in multiplayer game environments with her entire ethnographic research situated in the popular game World of Warcraft.
Her research interests include sociality in computer and video game play, theories of play and games, crowdsourcing and games, deviance and criminality in cyberspace, innovating social science research methods, and the social policy implications of digital technologies.
