Welcome from the Master

Congratulations on getting a place at Durham and at Grey College!

On behalf of everyone in Grey, I would like to welcome you to the College and to let you know that we’re here to help and support you throughout your time in Durham.

I hope that you find that Grey is a wonderful place to have as your home when you are a student. You’ll be joining an active and friendly community of people from all over the world, from many different backgrounds and with a huge range of interests. This year will, of course, be different than before. We know that the pandemic will restrict some of our activities. You’ll be getting more information about the details, and it’s too soon to say precisely when, or how, the restrictions will be lifted. However, please be assured that we have been working all summer to make sure that Grey will not only be a safe place, but also a welcoming and exciting place to be.

I hope the rest of your summer goes well, and I look forward to seeing you later this year.

Prof. Tom Allen, Master of Grey College

Sam Dornan, JCR President 2020-21

Welcome from the JCR President

Hi everyone – I’m Sam and welcome to Grey! I’ve just graduated with a BA Combined Honours in Social Sciences, and I’m lucky enough to be staying at Grey for another year as your JCR President. This means that I’m employed by you, the students, to run the JCR on a day-to-day basis and improve it to the best of my abilities. If you have any ideas or questions, however small or bizarre they may seem, then don’t hesitate to contact me at

You’ll most likely find me chatting the night away in Grey's own college bar, taking part in some kind of college sporting activity, rummaging through Durham's many charity shops, or working in our JCR Office. I look forward to meeting you all in September!

Sam Dornan, JCR President 2020-21
