New Postgraduate Students 2019
You're coming to Grey College - Welcome!
Welcome to Grey College, a place you are going to come to know and love, and call home for at least the next year. We look forward to welcoming you to our College Family during Induction Week.
Grey College is a wonderful place. Our students come from all over the world and from all walks of life, and we aim to make each and every one of you feel at home in the College from the day that you arrive.
We have excellent facilities, in a beautiful location close to the main University campus. Our staff are dedicated and professional, and they are ready to support you in your studies and personal development throughout your time at Durham. Alongside a development programme for students, the College also hosts a public lecture series and a variety of cultural events that all students are welcome to attend.
Of course, your experience at university is not just about your studies. At Grey, it is also about the people you meet and the things you do outside the classroom.
I hope that you enjoy life in Grey. A university education should offer much more than a degree, and at Grey we make sure that this is the case.
Prof. Tom Allen
Master of Grey College
Welcome from the Vice-Master
A very warm welcome to Grey College as you prepare to begin your postgraduate studies here. All the members of Grey College are looking forward to your arrival and hope that you have a happy and successful time here.
Postgraduate study is somewhat different to life as an undergraduate student, but you should all find it an enjoyable and rewarding experience. Grey College provides a pleasant environment for you to excel in your chosen discipline, as well as providing ample opportunities for you to get involved with a wide range of activities and pursuits outside your studies.
I look forward to meeting you all on Friday 27th September at the College’s Official Postgraduate Induction and Welcome event, and then getting to know you further throughout the academic year.
Dr Peter Swift
Welcome from the Middle Common Room
Hi there! We are MCR President Brad Berwin and Postgraduate Mentor Lily Hulatt, and we wish you a very warm welcome to the postgraduate community at Grey.
Throughout the year, postgraduate members of Grey College come together for a great number of social and academic events. This includes formal meals, movie nights, research seminars, cheese and wine evenings, PhD meet-ups, and cultural celebrations, as well as smaller daily events like after lunch coffee and tea in the MCR (the Phoenix Room). Fourth Years and Mature Students are also welcome to this fun and warm environment for people wanting to chill, or get advice for their studies.
We both have been a part of the MCR community for some years, and are very familiar with postgrad life and the various adjustments and learning experiences that comes with academia in Durham. Please feel free to come to us with queries or concerns, we will be around for Induction week and afterwards to make sure you all adjust as comfortably and quickly as possible. We hope you will love this community as much as we do, and we wish you all the very best with your studies here!
We have a Facebook page - please follow for events or updates for the coming Induction Week. https://www.facebook.com/groups/grey.mcr/
We also have Instagram - check out all the fun things we have done over the years! https://www.instagram.com/greycollegemcr/
Things to do before your arrival
Before your arrival at Grey College, please carefully read all the information on both this website and in your Welcome Pack - we'll be sending electronic versons to all of our postgraduate students. Then read and complete the three sections below:
- New Postgraduate Arrival Information - further useful information about arriving at Grey College;
- College Postgraduate Registration - our Online College Registration form;
- College Optional Charges - where you can find more information and opt to pay the relevant optional charges to enhance your student experience.
You should then view the information below on finding out about Events during your first week in Durham, including producing your Personal Induction Planner, and how to Enrol Online.
Your first week in Durham – University Induction Week Events Timetable
To help you keep track of where you need to be, and what you need to do during your first busy days at university, whether within your College or Department, we have created a day-by-day University Induction Planner. This should help you to plan your schedule, so you don't miss anything from being issued with your Campus Card or meeting the staff in your department, to trying out for a sports team or joining a student society.
The Timetable has been designed so College events don’t clash with any of your academic departmental events, but offer you lots of opportunities to meet the other new students, find your way around and settle in to college life here at Grey College.
Enrolment opens eight weeks before the start of your programme. After your acceptance has been processed you will receive two email messages from email@example.com which provide:
- Your Computing and Information Services (CIS) username
- How to derive your CIS password and guidance on how to access the system
After you have received both emails you will need to:
- Change your password
- Log into Durham University Online (DUO)
- Choose the “Banner Self Service” link in duo under “External Tools”
- Choose Registration and Enrolment
- Enrol with the University
- Upload a photograph for your campus card
You will receive information from your department about registering for your programme and modules. You should follow the advice given about whether to complete registration for programmes and modules before you come to Durham, or whether to wait until you arrive before making final choices, so that your department can give you further advice and information.
All of our College Staff are really looking forward to welcoming you to Grey College.
