New Undergraduate Students October 2019
You're coming to Grey College - Welcome!
Welcome to Grey College, a place you are going to come to know and love, and call home for the next three or four years. We look forward to welcoming you to our College Family during Induction Week.
Congratulations and Welcome from the Master
Congratulations on getting a place at Durham University, and in particular Grey College!
Grey College is a wonderful place. Our students come from all over the world and from all walks of life, and we aim to make each and every one of you feel at home in the College from the day that you arrive.
We have excellent facilities, in a beautiful location close to the main University campus. Our staff are dedicated and professional, and they are ready to support you in your studies and personal development throughout your time at Durham. Alongside a development programme for students, the College also hosts a public lecture series and a variety of cultural events that all students are welcome to attend.
Of course, your experience at university is not just about your studies. At Grey, it is also about the people you meet and the things you do outside the classroom. Our student organisation for undergraduate students – the Junior Common Room – is outstanding. They run a huge range of activities and events, and Sports, committees, clubs and Soceities for you to get involved with.
I hope that you enjoy life in Grey. A university education should offer much more than a degree, and at Grey we make sure that this is the case.
Prof. Tom Allen
Master of Grey College
Welcome from the JCR President
Hi everyone – I’m Leo and welcome to Grey! I’ve just graduated with a BA Combined Honours in Social Sciences, and I’m lucky enough to be staying at Grey for another year as your JCR President. This means that I’m employed by you, the students, to run the JCR on a day-to-day basis and improve it to the best of my abilities. If you have any ideas or questions, however small or bizarre they may seem, then don’t hesitate to contact me at email@example.com.
You’ll most likely find me rowing on the river, singing with our choir (the largest non-auditioned choir in Durham!), in our Toastie Bar, or working in our JCR Office. I look forward to meeting you all in September!
Things to do before your arrival
Before your arrival at Grey College, please carefully read all the information on both this website and in your Welcome Pack - students in the UK will shortly receive these by post, and we'll be sending electronic versons to all of our overseas students. Then read and complete the three sections below:
- New Undergraduate Arrival Information - further useful information about arriving at Grey College;
- College Undergraduate Registration - our Online College Registration form;
- College Optional Charges - where you can find more information and opt to pay the relevant optional charges to enhance your student experience.
You should then view the information below on finding out about Events during your first week in Durham, including producing your Personal Induction Planner, and how to Enrol Online.
Hi I’m Jacob and I’m your Senior Freshers’ Rep!

That means that I will be available to answer any questions you have before you get here and once you arrive. I’ll always be happy to point you in the right direction when it comes to settling into life in Durham for the next few years of your degree. I am also in charge of organising the social aspects of your College induction activities and am currently working hard to make it a week that you will look back on fondly as the best introduction to university life possible.
If you have ANY questions or concerns about coming to uni I’m happy to help, drop me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
I look forward to seeing you all in Induction week!
Jacob Bradbury, Senior Freshers Rep
Your first week in Durham – University Induction Week Events Timetable
To help you keep track of where you need to be, and what you need to do during your first busy days at university, whether within your College or Department, we have created a day-by-day University Induction Planner. This should help you to plan your schedule, so you don't miss anything from being issued with your Campus Card or meeting the staff in your department, to trying out for a sports team or joining a student society.
The Timetable has been designed so College events don’t clash with any of your academic departmental events, but offer you lots of opportunities to meet your fellow Freshers, find your way around and settle in to college life here at Grey College.
Enrolment opens eight weeks before the start of your programme. After your acceptance has been processed you will receive two email messages from email@example.com which provide:
- Your Computing and Information Services (CIS) username
- How to derive your CIS password and guidance on how to access the system
The emails are sent to the personal email address you provided when you applied, so it is important that you keep us up-to-date with any changes to this information by contacting the Student Records Team at firstname.lastname@example.org. You may also need to monitor your spam folders to see if the messages have arrived there.
After you have received both emails you will need to:
- Change your password
- Log into Durham University Online (DUO)
- Choose the “Banner Self Service” link in duo under “External Tools”
- Choose Registration and Enrolment
- Enrol with the University
- Upload a photograph for your campus card
You will receive information from your department about registering for your programme and modules. You should follow the advice given about whether to complete registration for programmes and modules before you come to Durham, or whether to wait until you arrive before making final choices, so that your department can give you further advice and information.
All of our College Staff are really looking forward to welcoming you to Grey College.
