Grey In The Community (GITC) was set up in 2011 as a way for students to contribute to the lives of people living in County Durham. Run initially by the JCR it is now a joint project between the JCR and Grey College. GITC runs three main projects.

First, sports day. GITC runs sports days once a term for local children with special needs and disabilities. These involve a morning at the University sports centre followed by an afternoon of arts and student-led entertainment. The aim is to allow these young people to try new activities and they clearly enjoy it – their enthusiasm is infectious.

Secondly, GITC visits a local nursing home for several afternoons every term. There is a wide variety of activities for volunteers and residents to enjoy together as well as the company that the volunteers provide.

Finally, we run the local branch of the national charity “Contact the Elderly”. Each month we host a tea party to combat loneliness in senior citizens.
