We offer degree courses that cover the full spectrum of Earth Sciences. Whether your interest lies in environmental geoscience, geophysics, or geology, whether you want to study for 3 years or 4 years, we have a course that will fulfil your needs. Our staff teach expansive, research-led curricula at the forefront of human knowledge.

Our degree courses will help you on your journey to a profession in the geoscience sector and beyond. Our modules can also be studied as part of a Natural Sciences degree course.

Professional recognition

All but one of our degree courses are accredited by our professional body (The Geological Society of London - GSL), demonstrating that our undergraduate courses cover the range of skills expected of a trained geoscientist at this level. The Geoscience degree course (F643) is not accredited and provides a more flexible route for students who are unable to carry out the amount of fieldwork required by the GSL for accreditation.

Research Facilities

Almost all of our teaching takes place in modern, purpose-built lecture rooms in the Arthur Holmes Building. We have recently invested in a brand new suite of optical microscopes, we have a large teaching collection of rocks, fossils, geological maps, and thin sections, and access to new university computing facilities. We train our students to use industry-standard and research-level software such as ESRI ArcGIS Pro and Matlab.

Undergraduates completing a dissertation or research project that involves laboratory study can benefit from our world-class geochemistry labs and rock mechanics labs that operate full-time analysing rocks and samples from across the world to answer a wide range of geoscience questions. More information on our facilities can be found here.

The Arthur Holmes Geological Society

The Arthur Homes Geological Society is a society for Earth Sciences students at Durham University. The society is run for students, by students, and organises a number of events throughout the year, including the annual AHGS ball - attended by all members of the Department, from undergraduates to staff.

You can find out more about the AHGS at their new website here or on Facebook.
