Charlotte Adams (Née Nuttall) completed her undergraduate degree in Environmental Geology at the University of St Andrews in 1996. She then moved to the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at Newcastle University where she gained her PhD in 1999 on the treatment of metaliferous discharges from historically abandoned lead/zinc mines. Charlotte then worked as a research associate at Newcastle University working on projects connected with water management and treatment in the mining and extractive industries.
Charlotte has both industrial and academic experience having joined industry on secondment to investigate the potential of abandoned mine workings for exploitation by ground source heat pumps. She subsequently worked in the renewable energy industry undertaking renewable energy feasibility studies and energy audits on behalf of the Carbon Trust until joining Durham University in 2009.
Charlotte joined Durham University as the Business Research Coordinator for Durham Energy Institute, and has worked on several multidisciplinary projects with colleagues from the departments of Engineering, Anthropology, Geography, History and Earth Sciences that have focused upon the socio-technical aspects of energy use from generation to end user. Charlotte was appointed as Research Manager for the BritGeothermal research partnership in 2013. This is a UK-based consortium established as a focus for deep geothermal energy research both in the UK and globally.
Charlotte was apointed as Lecturer in the Department of Geography in October 2015 where her research focuses on the water/energy nexus, mining, heat networks, geothermal energy and microgeneration. She is also an active member of Durham Energy Institute.
