Durham University

Department of Earth Sciences

Research Themes

The Earth and environmental sciences are more important than ever, as we seek to decarbonize energy, reduce environmental impacts of resource extraction, and to mitigate the risks of geohazards to a growing global population. These are interdisciplinary problems, and academics and researchers collaborate broadly across the university, and across the world. Our research is supported by world-class laboratory and analytical facilities, and by engagement with the University’s interdisciplinary Institutes and Research Centres. Research in the Department is organized into three broad and interdisciplinary themes.
