Dr. David Hirst PhD
(22 January 2019)
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Dr David Hirst on 11th January 2019.
David was a lecturer in the Department of Earth Sciences from 1960 until his retirement in 1994.
After a BSc and PhD in Geology at Manchester University, David worked as a Research Chemist for Mond Nickel in Birmingham before his appointment at Durham as a Lecturer in Geochemistry.
David’s research was concerned with the geochemistry of sedimentary rocks but his diverse interests mean that he will be remembered as an outstanding and dedicated lecturer in many aspects of geology, both in the class and the field.
During the 1960s David acted as Secretary to the Board of Studies and taught in Sierra Leone as part of Durham University’s partnership with the Fourah Bay College. From the early 1980s onwards, David was the Department’s Admissions Tutor, bringing him into contact with all of its undergraduates from the earliest stages of their University experience. David also spent many years opening the bowling for the Staff Cricket Club.
Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with David’s family at this extremely sad time.
David’s funeral will be at the Crematorium in Durham City at 9.30am on Saturday, 26 January, with a reception afterwards at the Radisson Hotel.
