Departmental IT Information

This page gives some general information about departmental IT support and various contact links.

General University computing questions

The University IT support is co-ordinated from a central helpdesk and initially all support requests should be logged with them - the helpdesk will triage all support requests and can help with general support issues e.g. can't connect laptop to wireless network, can I increase the size of my J: drive? When they are unable to assist they will pass the request on to the most appropriate person -which is why it is essential that you provide as much information as possible - what exactly is the problem (it's not working helps no one), your location, your machine name and IP address, or the name of any equipment you are using, as well as any steps you have already taken to try and fix the problem.

If you are experiencing difficulties, before contacting the Service Desk, please check the service status page

You can contact the IT Service Desk in a number of ways:

  • Complete an online form by clicking on the relevant box (you'll need your personal user name and password to access the form, please do not use non personal account details). Please be aware that these will be responded between 08:00 - 18:00, Monday to Friday and incidents which arise outside of these times should be reported via telephone unless it can wait until the next working day.
  • Call us on Ext 41515 or 0191 334 1515.
  • Pop in and see us in person at either the Durham City IT Service Desk on the 2nd floor of the Bill Bryson Library (next to the library's main reception) on Lower Mountjoy (between 08:00 and 18:00, Monday to Friday) or in the Queens Campus Library in the Ebsworth Building (between 09:00 and 17:00, Monday to Friday, during term time only).
  • NOTE: Access to the library is controlled by swipe card so you must have your campus card with you.

For emergency requests, very trivial requests (e.g. to borrow a cable), or requests that require explanation in person: Matthew Hepburn is a member of CIS team located in the department - his desk is in the open plan just outside the coffee room and you can contact him on x43294

If you contact the IT Service Desk by email, using the web forms or by phone, please make it clear that your request is for the attention of Matthew / Earth Sciences.
