Arts of Habit, Habits of Art: Slow Time, Ecologies, Vision

4th June 2019, 10:00 to 16:00, Lindisfarne Centre, St Aidan's College

A joint research conversation between the Centre for Visual Arts & Culture and the Centre for Cultural Ecologies.

Our habits make us. Artistic practice, aware of itself as cultivated habit lived through a span of time, shifts the focus of both viewer and artist from product to process, from artefact to mode of doing/being. In this one-day research conversation we will explore the artistic practices of contemporary artists who commit long spans of time to gradual, cumulative projects, in modes of self-documentation, chronobiology, repetition with a difference, and habitual making. Bringing these practices into dialogue with wider questions of ecology, both of self and world, we will consider how habits have the potential to create, transform, or destroy habitats, or to bring them freshly into view. In habit lies yet another lesson of the Anthropocene, our vexed new epoch that incessantly demands adequate 'arts of noticing' (Lowenhaupt Tsing).

The workshop will coincide with the opening of an exhibition showcasing works from Durham’s art collection that deal with the theme of ecology and the environment. The exhibition has been curated by MA Visual Culture students and Alix Collingwood-Swinburn, Durham’s Curator of Western Art.
