Art Exhibition: Continuous Material
As part of CVAC's Contemporary Art in Focus series, curated by Hazel Donkin, Sam Watson and Eleanor Wright present an exhibition that explores Durham Castle’s historical and cultural narratives, evidenced by countless stories and physical alterations.
Public open evening, Friday May 1st, 7.30 – 9.30pm, refreshments, all welcome
The castle has gone from fortress to comfortable student accommodation; Continuous Material asks what it means to preserve a cultural landmark, especially one that has gone through centuries of immense political and religious upheaval and social change. The show includes work by Wright and Watson in the Tunstall Gallery and the Tunstall Chapel, as well as the work of three invited artists, Sini Pelkki (a Finnish artist whose film Embarkation will be screened in the Tunstall Chapel at the open evening on May 1st) http://www.sinipelkki.net/web/index.php; Amalia Pica (whose sculptural work in the Castle will relate to the notion of passed down and distorted lines of communication through cultural artefacts and monumental structures) http://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2012/jun/28/artist-of-week-amalia-pica and Paul Becker (whose work is concerned with the possibilities of narrative. Paul will lead a special ‘Castle tour’ at the open evening on May 1st).
During the exhibition 3 specialist public tours of the Castle will be held that incorporate the exhibition (bookable via the regular tour website https://www.dur.ac.uk/durham.castle/ )
