Education Studies is a broad multi-disciplinary degree, designed for the intellectually and practically curious. From the philosophical foundations of schooling, to the political implications of policy, education is a vast field that has multiple avenues to approach a seemingly straightforward subject. Our degree goes far beyond any classroom and considers education, people and their relationship to the ever-changing world.
The breadth of our modules allows for the creation of pathways through the course. This may be linked to one of the degree's four strands of educational expertise: pragmatic; sociological-philosophical; psychological; and international-intercultural education. You will also study modules in the Department of Sociology.

Course Learning and Teaching
The degree is mainly delivered through lectures and seminars. Lectures often present, explain and critically analyse theories and relevant issues, whereas smaller group seminars normally focus upon peer-assisted interaction for debate and discussion. There may be some opportunity for study visits and/or field work within specific modules. A large amount of time is spent on independent study and reading around topics, developing students’ capacity for critical analysis, reflection and evaluation.
Assessment is mainly through essays. Some modules may include examinations, portfolios, podcasts, presentations or posters.

IB Diploma score – 36 with 665 in higher level subjects.
We welcome applications from those with other qualifications equivalent to our standard entry requirements and from mature students with non-standard qualifications or who may have had a break in their study.

Fees and Funding
The tuition fees for 2021/22 academic year have not yet been finalised, they will be displayed here once approved.
The tuition fees shown for home and EU students are for one complete academic year of full time study and are set according to the academic year of entry. Fees for subsequent years of your course may rise in line with an inflationary uplift as determined by the government.
The tuition fees shown for overseas students are for one complete academic year of full time study, are set according to the academic year of entry, and remain the same throughout the duration of the programme for that cohort (unless otherwise stated).

Scholarships and funding
School of Education
The Education Studies degree is an excellent programme if you want to keep your options open. As well as opening up routes into teaching, the programme also qualifies you for careers in educational research, educational publishing, educational administration, policy or management, as well as a range of careers in the commercial or public sector.
Of those students who left in 2017:
- 97% are in employment or further study six months after graduating

- 92% are in graduate level employment

Students who have graduated from Education Studies in the past 5 years have taken positions as Journalists, Youth Workers, Archivists, Charity Development Officers, Publishers and Music Therapists as well as professional preparation and study as Social Workers, Teachers, Psychotherapists and Midwives.
In addition many students go on to further study within educational research. For example, a taught MA, or MA in Research Methods (Education), some have gone onto funded PhDs.
The programme is also an excellent preparation for a career in teaching at either primary or secondary level. Although the degree does not offer Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), you may be able to progress onto a one year Postgraduate Certificate in Education programme (PGCE). However, it is important to stress that you are not expected to teach, and this degree is in no way focused around the competencies of a teacher.
The BA Education Studies - Psychology programme is fully accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and as such provides clear career paths into a number of professions including teaching and educational psychology. The BPS recognition ensures that students who wish to work in a field requiring memberships of the BPS are prepared and qualified to do so.
