Course Content

Description

The social determinants of health, the social gradient in health and the role of public policy and practice in tackling health inequalities in the UK and beyond. How public health and well being evidence is translated in policy and policy is translated into practice through flows of evidence and knowledge between policy, practice and research. Research and leadership skills.

Course Structure

Eight taught modules (15 credits per module) plus 1 Dissertation (60 Credit points). All taught modules are timetabled for Michaelmas & Epiphany. Dissertation is timetabled during Easter & Summer term.

Teaching and assessment details

Assessment is assignment based. Modes of summative assessment may include written assignments, assessed course work, and a reflective diary and/or log book.

Candidates must attempt Qualitative and Quantitative Health Research Methods modules before enrolling for the dissertation, and must pass these before being eligible for assessment in the dissertation.

Admissions Process

Subjects required, level and grade

  • 2.1 Hons degree or international equivalent OR professional qualification or two years relevant work-based experience
  • A pass at Grade C or above in mathematics at GCSE level or equivalent is also required
  • Applicants without a degree will be required to demonstrate sufficient academic capability to satisfactorily complete their programme. This may entail submission of a portfolio of work or a 2,000 word essay on a nominated topic. Students without a Grade C pass at GCSE level or equivalent may be required to complete a mathematical exercise.

English Language Requirements

  • Achieve an overall band score of at least 7.0 in the IELTS test (with no other element below 6.0) or
  • Achieve at least102 in the TOEFL iBT (Internet Based Test) (with no element under 23).

Satisfactory English language proficiency.

Overview

The School has a young and vibrant community of academics and clinical practitioners conducting policy, clinical and service level research and providing undergraduate teaching in medicine. It also offers flexible postgraduate courses and CPD for academic and health and social care professional communities.

School members enjoy a wide range of research seminars and workshops throughout the academic year. Internal seminars range frominternal research development sessions for students and staff to latest findings and discussion pieces from the School's five research centres and three research service units. Students and staff are invited to regular public guest lectures by world renowned academics and policymakers.
