Will I be less likely to be offered a place if I choose to take a gap year?
We recognise that many students take a gap year, in order to study, to travel and to work, and if you are planning to take a gap year or are taking one already your application will not be disadvantaged in any way. Once we have made you an offer, however, we will not allow you to defer the place for a year on the basis that you have decided to take a gap year, so if you are thinking of taking a break between school and university you need to make the decision before you submit the application. (If, however, you need to request a deferral on medical grounds, or on the grounds of other extenuating circumstances not foreseen at the time of application, your request will be sympathetically considered.) If you are not permitted to defer the place, and then withdraw and reapply for the following October, the fact that you have applied for and been offered a place in the previous cycle will have no bearing, positive or negative, on the outcome of the new application.
