Harriet Briggs

Harriet Briggs is studying for a PhD at Newcastle University. Her thesis, on 'Laughter, Power and Expression in the Novels of Charlotte Brontë' examines literary representations of smiles and laughter, and the wider social and moral significance attached to laughter in literary culture c.1830-60. Her research interests centre on the mid-century novel, particularly in relation to character science, body language and psychological discourse. Harriet co-founded and coordinates the North East Postgraduate Research Group for the Long Nineteenth Century.
