PGR Professional Development Event

CNCS presents: ‘Opportunities Across the Pond’

Aiming to promote global scholarship and transatlantic nineteenth-century studies, this event is open to postgraduates from all Arts and Humanities disciplines at Durham, Northumbria and Newcastle universities. CNCS has brought together a panel of scholars with experience of research positions at institutions in North America.

Dr. James Sobaskie (Mississippi State University) will lead the proceedings and present where his research has taken him and how he cultivates academic relationships across the globe. He will be joined by other panellists, including IAS Fellow Professor Barbara Risman (University of Illinois at Chicago), for a Q&A session aiming to answer queries and share advice to PGRs and ECRs on negotiating research and career options on both sides of the pond.

Attendees will come away with a clearer picture of how to build a presence beyond the UK and Europe, what to tackle in applications for post-doc and teaching fellowships at North American institutions and ways to enlarge their academic networks.

2 – 2.15 welcome, with tea and coffee
2.15 – 2.45 Dr. Sobaskie
2.45 – 3.15 introduction of panellists
3.15 – 4pm Q&A using pre-circulated questions

We encourage attendees to send in questions for the panel via Twitter (@durhamcncs #CNCStateside), the CNCS postgrad and post-doc Facebook page, or by email to Lindsay Macnaughton at lindsay.h.macnaughton@durham.ac.uk
