Conference Rationale

CNCS International is the collaborative initiative of CNCS (Durham), CNCS (Aarhus), Centre D’Histoire du XIX Siècle (Sorbonne) and the Nineteenth-Century Studies Research Unit (Monash). It was founded in 2017 as a means of creating the nucleus of a consortium of international research centres interested in developing nineteenth-century studies through an integrated international network of people, activities and institutions.
Its five-year aims are:
  • to host international training, research and development events focusing on nineteenth-century studies
  • to create opportunities for academic and student (postgraduate and postdoctoral) exchanges
  • to discuss the possible creation of an International Nineteenth-Century Studies Association
Dedicated to expanding our understanding of nineteenth-century studies internationally, the inaugural CNCS international conference aims to ‘take the temperature’ of nineteenth-century studies internationally. We have therefore invited a range of speakers from all over the world, representing the widest possible institutional constituencies including independent research organizations, university and national research centres, and professional organizations. They include academic staff, postgraduate students, postdoctoral researchers and professional curators. We welcome them to CNCS International and hope they will become integral components in the core membership of CNCS International.
