Durham University Online - duo

The University's online learning environment (also known as a VLE or LMS) is called duo - which stands for 'Durham University Online'. It can be accessed anywhere from: This is the URL you should use in any bookmarks. If you are having trouble logging on try this guide.

Mobile phone/tablet users can also access duo using the Blackboard Student app (an Instructor version for staff is coming shortly). This app is free to all Durham staff and students.

The duo service provides:

  • facilities to structure learning materials
  • communication and collaboration tools
  • online assessment and feedback tools
  • integrated media and tools to support reflection
  • resource discovery features
  • user and course management tools

You may also hear the term 'Blackboard' - duo is built on top of the Blackboard Learn platform. As well as Blackboard, duo includes integrations with a range of other tools such as Turnitin, PebblePad, WebPA and Kaltura. Durham was an early adopter of Blackboard, starting in the year 2000. Today it is an integral part of learning and teaching at Durham.

Many features of duo have been extended by staff from the LTT using Java 'Building Block' technology.

Durham was an early user of the community portal - if you are interested in this you may want to look at the case studies in the related links section.

The LTT Help Blog contains advice for staff and students about using duo to enhance their learning and teaching, including a range of guides.
