The Irvine Lecture has been hosted by Durham Law School since 2002, when the inaugural lecture in the series was given by the then Lord Chancellor, Lord Irvine of Lairg -- the principal architect of the Human Rights Act 1998. Each year, the lecture is delivered by a distinguished academic, practitioner, or judge, and tackles a pressing human rights issue of our time.
Past Irvine lectures have tackled problems such as Brexit and human rights (Dominic Grieve), poverty and austerity (Françoise Tulkens), human rights in the digital age (Kate O'Regan), environmental protection and human rights (Helen Keller) and disinformation (Tim Eicke).
For the Irvine Lecture 2023 we welcome Prof Gráinne de Burca (NYU)
