Were clear about what we believe is important

Our mission is to deliver excellence in education, research and the wider student experience. But we also want to make sure we do that in the most sustainable way possible - especially as we’re custodians of our campus, much of our city, and our local area.

We take our duties seriously, which is why we’re clear about what we’re aiming for when it comes to sustainability.

Our aims

Right now, we have 3 main aims:

  1. Putting sustainability at the heart of everything we do

We want to make sure that sustainability is at the heart of everything we do, so that our people and our students understand the role that we can all play.

  1. Reducing our greenhouse gas emissions

We want to reduce our Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) to achieve Net Zero by 2035, and to play our part in meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement.

  1. Reaching Absolute Zero emissions by 2050

We want to continue reducing our Scope 3 emissions, with a longer term objective of achieving Absolute Zero emissions by 2050.

What else are we doing?

As well as reducing our greenhouse gas emissions, our sustainability ambitions also include:

  • Only using electricity from renewable sources
  • Retrofitting our gas powered infrastructure with carbon neutral energy sources
  • Significantly increasing our solar power capabilities across our estate
  • Achieving biodiversity net-gain by 2032 through our Biodiversity Strategy
  • Minimising waste production, increasing recycling and reuse, and promoting sustainable transport

And we’ll also keep doing what we do best: supporting world-class and world-changing research that directly addresses issues of environmental sustainability.
