Teaching Kits

Kit 2: References

The UCAS reference has a pivotal role in university admissions. Admissions selectors value the opinion of a fellow academic to assist them through an often highly competitive selection process. The reference provides the only opportunity for teachers and advisers to communicate the merit and potential of their students and gives an avenue to highlight particularly outstanding students.

This kit provides guidance on areas such as: what admissions selectors are looking for; effective structure and the challenges; pitfalls of writing a UCAS reference.

How can this kit help YOU?

This kit will help you and your colleagues to:

  • better support your students in their university applications;
  • deepen your understanding of the role of the UCAS reference in the UCAS application process;
  • identify an effective structure for the reference;
  • have an appreciation of the role of the Admissions Selector, particularly within a competitive institution.

"Each year I do a refresher for all tutors writing references, spending more time with those new to the process. This will help me structure it and provide a checklist to cover everything."
