Bringing a bike to Durham

Students are discouraged from bringing cars to the University because of traffic and parking problems. But this can turn out to be a good thing! Durham is a beautiful city, best observed on foot or by wheel rather than behind wheel. All departments and colleges are within walking distance of each other, and cycling will get you around even quicker. You will gain fitness and keep healthy (all important for fending off the worst of the freshers flu bugs flying around each term). What's more, having a bike at university enables you to escape its campus every so often - Durham is surrounded by lovely countryside and a fantastic network of cycle routes reclaimed from the county's old railways. Forget the hackneyed views of the Cathedral from the river banks - head out to the hills for some rarer glimpses of the cityscape.
