SRIF3 Funding Success

(8 December 2005)

CeREES put together a joint SRIF bid with the Durham Centre for Renewable Energy entitled "Durham Energy Research: Renewable and Earth Energy Resources for a Sustainable Future". The bid – co-ordinated by Ken Durose (Physics) and Bob Holdsworth was considered to be the strongest across the entire University. We were awarded £2.6 Million and this includes funds to support the setting up of a Faculty Electron Microscopy Centre. This facility may be located in Earth Sciences. The Department will additionally be purchasing the following: i) Quad ICP-MS plus 193 nm laser ablation equipment: this will keep the geochemistry facility at the leading edge. ii) Riegl LMS4201 Terrestrial Laser Scanner: this forms a key component of the new Centre for Terrestrial Laser Scanning (CeTLS) (see below) iii) A building upgrade for a High P experimental lab: this will underpin the research of Steve Parman and will establish new links with the Department of Chemistry. All in all, given that the microscope facility will probably be located in our building, this represents an investment of ~£2 Million 'in' Earth Sciences.
