Project overview

My project examines the role of the British, French and Russian navies’ presence in American ports and waters during the US Civil War. European men-of-war acquired the new roles of courier, spy, and diplomat during the conflict, while they remained potent military strike forces. The project looks into what European neutrality meant on the ground and at sea during the conflict, beyond the questions of war and peace officially decided in capitals.
