Biography
Tufyal Choudhury joined Durham Law School in 2000. He is a graduate of the Universities of London (School of Oriental and African Studies, 1996) and Cambridge (Hughes Hall, 1998) and was called to the Bar as a member of Inner Temple (1997) He was previously a research associate at the Cambridge University Centre for Public Law (1998-2000).
He teaches international human rights law at Durham Law School. He is also a Research Associate at the University of Oxford Centre on Migration, Policy and Society (www.compas.ox.ac.uk), a senior policy advisor to the Open Society Institute's At Home in Europe Project(www.eumap.org) and a member of the EU Network of Experts on Violent Radicalisation.
His research and publications cover the areas of racial and religious discrimination, integration, human rights and counter terrorism, contributing to advancing both academic and public policy debates.
Since 2002 he has worked with the Open Society Institute (OSI) in developing research reports aimed a influencing public policy in relation to Muslims and intergration in Europe. In 2002, he was author of the OSI Report, 'The Situation of Muslims in the UK'. In 2004, he was asked to lead the OSI Muslims in the UK policy research programme. The launch of the project's final report 'Muslims in the UK: Policies for Engaged Citizens' was hosted by the then Home Office Minister, Fiona McTaggart, in the House of Commons. The publication was also reported in national and international news media. After the July 2005 London bombings he was also asked to prepare the European Union Monitoring Centre’s report on Muslim Perceptions of Islamophobia and was invited to be a member of the UK Government’s post 7/7 Working Group on Preventing Extremism. Since 2006, he has been senior policy advisor to the OSI research programme ‘At Home in Europe: Muslims in EU Cities'. He is author the projects research report 'Muslims in Europe: a report on 11 EU cities' published in December 2009.
At the international level, he has provided briefings on issues relating to his research to the European Union Parliamentary group on anti-racism and diversity, the OSCE, and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. He has participated in expert seminars and working groups of policy makers and researchers with the Brookings Institute, Migration Policy Institute, the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, the International Institute for Strategic Studies and Wilton Park. He has presented research papers at international conferences in Brussels, Cambridge, Florence, Helsinki, San Francisco, Sofia, Turin, Vienna, and Washington DC. In 2002 he was selected to participate in the Foreign Office sponsored British-German Forum, which brings together ‘emerging leaders and opinion formers’ from the two countries. In 2006, he was selected by the US State Department to participate in its International Visitor Leadership Programme. He has also been selected to participate in the World Economic Forum’s Muslim Leaders of Tomorrow programme (2006)and in 2008 the German Marshall Fund/Robert Bosch Stiftung Transatlantic Forum on Migration and Integration.
He has appeared as an expert on issues of human rights, integration and counter-terrorism on the BBC, CNN and European news channels.
He has held national level advisory positions to government (Department of Communities and Local Government, Community Attitudes Survey), research institutions (Democratic Audit, based at the Essex University Centre for Human Rights www.democraticaudit.com), NGOs (JUSTICE, Discrimination Law Project), Charities (Trustee at the Muslim Youth Helpline www.myh.org) and other bodies (Judicial Studies Board’s Equal Treatment Advisory Committee www.jsboard.co.uk). In 2006-07 he was elected chair of the Discrimination Law Association(www.discriminationlaw.org.uk). He is a member of the Muslims in Britain Research Network, the Durham University Human Rights Centre.
