Biography

Thom Brooks is Reader in Law at Durham Law School arriving in 2012. He is an Associate in Philosophy with links to research centres in Law, Government and Philosophy, including Centre for Criminal Law and Criminal Justice; Centre for Ethics, Law and Life Sciences, Centre for the History of Political Thought, Gender and Law at Durham , Human Rights Centre and the Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research. Brooks has held visiting appointments at St John's College, Oxford; St Andrews and Uppsala and he taught previously at Newcastle. He is an Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences, Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Brooks is the founding editor of the Journal of Moral Philosophy.

Current Research

Brooks works in the areas of criminal law, jurisprudence, political philosophy and public policy. His recent research addresses citizenship and immigration, including the use of citizenship tests. His research has been noted in the House of Lords and Brooks authored the most comprehensive report into the 'Life in the UK' test receiving widespread media coverage in 270+ newspapers and media outlets including the BBC, The Daily ExpressThe Daily Mail, The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, The Huffington PostThe Independent, London Evening Standard, Northern Echo, The ScotsmanThe Sunday TimesThe Times, Yorkshire Post and many others - covered also by Comedy Central. Brooks publishes widely on global justice and human rights (including the place of capabilities) as well as punishment and restorative justice with a special focus on criminalization and sentencing policy. His recent books include Punishment (2012) launched in the Houses of Parliament, Hegel's Political Philosophy: A Systematic Reading of the Philosophy of Right 2d (2013) and (co-edited with Martha C. Nussbaum) Rawls's Political Liberalism (2013, forthcoming). Brooks has contributed to the Newcastle Fairness Commission Report.
