Repositioning Europe in an era of global transformation
15th - 17th September, 2010
Europahaus, Vienna. Austria
Aims
The first decade of the 21st century has been characterised by a significant enlargement of the European Union, a financial and economic crisis marking the end of a sustained, yet imbalanced, period of growth, significant shifts in the relative economic weight of different parts of the world (rise of the BRICs for example) and increasing concern about the sustainability of modern styles of life. These trends imply a repositioning of European urban and regional economies and a deepening of cross border relations with countries in the wider European periphery. The conference addresses the implications of this realignment for Europe, its cities, regions and people.
Specifically, the conference will address: how creative cities and regions can be established and sustained in a time of financial crisis and intensified competition, how European regional economies and societies are affected by widening trade relations and cross border cooperation, how to ensure that inequality and exclusion, unresolved during a period of growth, are not marginalised further in a period of recession and recovery; and how to theorise and devise new development trajectories that are economically and environmentally sustainable and inclusive.
To address these questions the Editors propose the following broad themes but also welcome papers that cut across or go beyond those specified:
- Global Competitive Pressures and Regional Realignment
- Changing Global Divisions of Labour and Regional Development
- Financial/Economic Crisis and the Restructuring of Cities and Regions
- Surviving/ Living through the Crisis / Uneven Impact of the Recession
