Research in Social Informatics

This research area considers the social effects of computerisation. For instance, it addresses the differences between face to face interaction and computer mediated communication. It also includes computer ethics, the effects of computerisation on individuals and computer communities. The introduction of technology usually has disadvantages as well as advantages and this research area addresses these issues. We use research techniques from both the social sciences and the sciences to tackle these problems.

Applications are welcome from graduates with a social science background as well as computer scientists. Current work includes evaluating the use of counselling via the internet and social network analysis. Projects are available which address the effects of electronic mail and electronic newsgroups. Research into applying qualitative research methods in the social aspects area is also welcomed.
