Inside the Arches: Witchcraft for Muggles
Durham Book Festival
This event will be led by Dr Sarah Price, Head of Heritage Collections Education Team. The existence of witches, or not, has long fascinated and intrigued people. This session is a chance to see, handle and discuss historic texts and documents relating to witchcraft from the archives and special collections of Palace Green Library.
On display will be a remnant of a Sixteenth century notice possibly calling for the punishment of a witch in Durham, books arguing that witches are nothing more than charlatans, books arguing that dismissing witchcraft is foolish, trial records of those accused of witchcraft and contemporary accounts of the Salem witch trials. Together, the books and other material offer muggles a fascinating glimpse into how witches have been seen and treated over the past 400 years.
