How to configure a home page in a browser

This page provides information about how to configure your browser to set the browser's home page:

Home pages

There are now three 'home pages' in the site:

  • The University external home page, focussed on the needs of external visitors to the University web site
    URL: http://www.dur.ac.uk/

  • The Staff gateway is an internal home page containing links to information primarily of use to staff in the University
    URL: http://www.dur.ac.uk/staff.gateway/

  • The Student gateway is an internal home page containing links to information primarily of use to students in the University.
    URL: http:/www.dur.ac.uk/student.gateway/

Mozilla/Netscape 7x

  1. Select the home page which you wish to use from the above list, and copy its URL into the clipboard (in MS Windows, select the URL and press Ctrl/C).
  2. In the Menu bar, select Edit > Preferences.
  3. Paste the copied URL (in MS Windows, using Ctrl/V) into the text box labelled Location: and click the OK button.

Internet Explorer 5 and above

  1. Select the home page which you wish to use from the above list, and copy its URL into the clipboard (in MS Windows, select the URL and press Ctrl/C).
  2. In the Menu bar, select Tools > Internet Options.
  3. Paste the copied URL into the text box labelled Address (in MS Windows, using Ctrl/V), and click on the Use Current button.
  4. Click on the OK button.

Opera 7.5

  1. Select the home page which you wish to use from the above list, and copy its URL into the clipboard (in MS Windows, select the URL and press Ctrl/C).
  2. In the Menu bar, select Tools > Preferences.
  3. Paste the copied URL into the text box labelled Start with home page (in MS Windows, using Ctrl/V), and click on the Start and exit button.
  4. Click on the OK button.

Internet Explorer for the Mac

  1. Select the home page which you wish to use from the above list, and copy its URL into the clipboard.
  2. In the Menu bar, select Edit > Preferences.
  3. In the Web Browser section, select Browser Display.
  4. Paste the copied URL into the text box labelled Address, and click on the OK button.

Opera (pre 7.5)

  1. Select the home page which you wish to use from the above list, and copy its URL into the clipboard (in MS Windows, select the URL and press Ctrl/C).
  2. In the Menu bar, select File > Preferences.
  3. Paste the copied URL into the text box labelled Start with home page (in MS Windows, using Ctrl/V), and click on the Start and exit button.
  4. Click on the OK button.

Firefox

  1. Select the home page which you wish to use from the above list, and copy its URL into the clipboard (in MS Windows, select the URL and press Ctrl/C).
  2. In the Menu bar, select Edit > Preferences.
  3. Click on the General icon in the left bar.
  4. Paste the copied URL into the text box labelled Locations (in MS Windows, using Ctrl/V), and click on the Use Current Page button.
  5. Click on OK.

Konqueror

  1. Select the home page which you wish to use from the above list, and copy its URL into the clipboard.
  2. In the Menu bar, select Settings > Configure Konqueror.
  3. Select Behaviour in the left hand bar.
  4. Paste the copied URL intothe text box labelled Home URL, and click on the OK button.
