Through the Staff Volunteering Programme, the University has made a commitment to enable all staff members to apply to volunteer for up to 5-days per year in work time (pro-rata for part-time staff members), subject to line manager approval.
Staff members can choose to volunteer on a variety of different activities, either individually or part of a team. Team Challenges bring groups of staff members together to volunteer with an organisation to complete a one-off task. Groups can be formed from members of staff from a single department or from across the University. Specific Team Challenges are advertised on our website or you can contact the Staff Volunteering & Outreach team to discuss your requirements.
Individual volunteering within work time is also supported by the Staff Volunteering and Outreach programme. This can either be with an organisation that you already work with, or a community partner suggested by the SVO team, according to your interests and needs. There are also more structured programmes for individual volunteering including the Business Ambassadors Scheme and the School Governors Programme, both of which have proven popular with staff members.
The SVO team works with a growing number of academic departments across the University to facilitate student placements as part of degree programmes. Through these projects, groups of students work together to tackle a real business problem faced by a community or third sector organisation and offer practical solutions to these issues. Some of the most successful projects have so far seen groups of Computer Science students work with a large number or local organisations, and students studying at Durham Business School delivering marketing and business plans for community groups in the North East.
