As Principal of Ustinov College I am responsible for leading the implementation of the University strategy within the College, leadership of a cohesive and distinctive College based scholarly community and active participation in fundraising, stewardship and the green development of the College premises and facilities. Further to College responsibilities, and in my capacity as Professor of Climatology in the Department of Geography, I teach and research in the areas of climate and health, climate and society and the analysis of water resources in a climate context.
I have worked in the higher education for around 30 years. Before joining Durham I was the Inaugural Director of the School of Environment at the University of Auckland in New Zealand and prior to that held academic posts at King’s College London (Professor of Physical Geography), the University of Birmingham (Reader in Synoptic Climatology), Hong Kong Baptist University and the University of Papua New Guinea and worked as a researcher in the Institute of Low Temperature Science at Hokkaido University in Japan. I completed all my education in New Zealand at the University of Auckland (BSc and MSc) and Canterbury University (PhD).

I support the Principal in providing a stimulating environment for academic study, scholarly, cultural and development activities and social interaction which engages students and members of the wider Ustinov Community, including the Graduate Common Room, Senior Common Room, mentors, alumni, and visiting academics. As part of my role I create opportunities for personal development of students; assist in the realisation of the College's vision and mission; and the creation of a wide range of activities aimed at furthering the University and College strategy, especially in relation to building a strong research culture within the College.
I joined Ustinov College in September 2014 but I’ve had close working links with the College for many years. Prior to joining Ustinov I worked in the University’s International Office supporting international students and their families as an International Student Adviser before taking the post of Admissions and Events Officer to manage the admissions process for overseas students applying for undergraduate programmes at Durham.

I can be found in the Operations Office and am available weekdays, during office hours. I manage everything to do with the financial and operational side of the college, supported by Assistant Managers who lead teams that look after the hospitality, services and domestic functions. The café and bar staff, the porters and the housekeepers each led by one of the team of assistant managers are all committed to providing the highest quality of service.
I joined Ustinov College in November 2012 as the Operations Manager and then performed the joint role of College Bursar and Operations Manager for two years before being appointed Business Operations Manager in April 2016. Prior to joining Ustinov College I served for thirty years as a police officer with Durham Constabulary performing many varied roles during a highly enjoyable career.
