The Junior Common Room (JCR) is the undergraduate body of the College with around 750 members and also the common room itself, consisting of 2 lounges with TV, and the 11th Century Undercroft Bar.
The JCR is led by the 'Exec' - a group of students who fulfil various positions, elected annually by their fellow students. As a member of University College, you have the opportunity to run for any of the Exec positions. Such positions offer valuable leadership responsibilities and the chance to develop an impressive skill set.
The head of the JCR is the Senior Student, who chairs the JCR Executive Committee, the most important of the student committees within College. The JCR Exec is the main link between the student body and the College Officers. Other Exec positions include the Vice Senior Student, the JCR Treasurer, Sponsorship & Liaison Officer, Welfare Officer, Social Chair, Services Manager, Bar Chairman, Bar Vice, Livers-Out Rep and Senior DSU Rep.
There are many clubs and societies at University College to help you make the most of your time here and enjoy activities outside of your academic studies.
Castle has excellent clubs in most sports.
Our most popular sports teams include rugby (both men and women), football, hockey, lacrosse (mixed), and netball.
Rowing is also extremely popular with University College Boat Club (UCBC) having over 150 members and regualry taking part in many regattas around the country, including Henley. Several new boats have been purchased recently and we have our own boathouse.
We have a number of drama groups through which you can get involved either 'behind the scenes' or in performance (whether you have acted before or not!). Our longest-running group are called the 'Castle Theatre Company'. Our students put on outstanding performances throughout the year, performing in the University's assembly rooms theatre and in various venues around College including our atmospheric Norman chapel and our Undercroft bar.
If you're musical, you might like to join our popular Castle Big Band, or perhaps one of our two thriving choirs.
For those interested in art, we also have our own Fine Art Society.
Outreach and Charity Work
The College takes part in many fundraising events for charity and students help in the local community in many ways.
Much of this undertaken through CCA (Castle Community Action), as well as (Durham University Charities Kommittee) and SCA (Student Community Action). Members of the College volunteer their time to various causes. CCA has four divisions which run regular volunteering sessions (Homelessness, Elderly Care and Heritage Management, Primary Ed, and Secondary Ed), as well as the Community Days division which runs one-off events and invites local residents into the Castle.
From relaxed, small-scale events like open-mic nights and quizzes in our Undercroft Bar, to large-scale annual events like our themed 'Castle Day' and our Winter and Summer balls, we have lots going on at Castle. Our events are organised by students, for students.
