Learning and teaching

Read for a degree at Durham University and you will have the opportunity to be among the best staff and students in your chosen subject – whether that is in arts and humanities, sciences, social sciences or health.

With 25 academic departments and more than 200 undergraduate programmes, our teaching and research are admired both nationally and internationally.

Ranked as a world top 100 university, research-led education is at the core of Durham University. It shapes and inspires our approach to the content of our programmes, the academic staff that we appoint, and how we educate our students. Our distinctive approach to research-led education ensures that our programmes are up-to-date and intellectually stimulating and our students become an integral part of academic communities of practice. It also helps explain why Durham University was ranked 34th globally for employer reputation (QS World University Rankings 2018).

Our most recent audit by the Quality Assurance Agency (the independent body entrusted with monitoring the standards and quality in UK higher education) specifically commended on 'the University's comprehensive approach to defining and developing research-led teaching'.

Centre for Teaching and Learning

New for 2019/20, our centrally located Centre for Teaching and Learning (pictured above) will offer state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities, taking advantage of the latest digital technologies to help us deliver education that is challenging, enabling, research-led and transformative.

The Centre will offer a wide range of learning environments, including new classrooms that will allow students to share courses in real time with peers from institutions around the world. There will be lecture theatres, teaching rooms, education labs where new teaching and training methods will be developed, student learning zones and catering facilities.

Educated by world-leading experts

One of the aspects which makes Durham different is our approach to teaching and research, and the intrinsic link between the two.

  • Our research-led approach to teaching ensures that your academic studies are up-to-date, modern and stimulating. You will have access to some of the world's finest academic minds and be taught by leaders in their fields.
  • Our academic and college staff work together to ensure that over 95% of students successfully complete their degree - one of the highest student completion rates in the UK (The Complete University Guide 2018).

"The extensive support and help received from professors, staff and student alike has made learning at Durham Univerity rewarding and enjoyable. Several lecturers have incorporated examples of their current research areas into the course such that students are kept up-to-date with the Chemistry field."
