Performance and leadership

Our sporting philosophy is to provide opportunities to allow exceptional people to do exceptional things, and few universities so successfully and consistently combine sporting and academic excellence.

Our Elite Athletes Performance Programme is exceptional. It caters for all of our top athletes and is tailored to individual requirements. Elite athletes have access to a wide range of support services including strength and conditioning training, injury support and nutritional guidance. Add in state-of-the-art facilities in Durham and at Queen’s Campus, with an experienced team of dedicated staff, and you are well on the way to realising your full sporting potential.

Durham enjoys British Rowing Performance Centre status, First Class County Cricket status, British Fencing Centre status, Tennis Foundation University Performance Centre status, and English Lacrosse High Performance University status. Our teams also compete in the England Hockey National Leagues, the British Basketball League and the FS Women's Superleague

At Durham, students are able to take part in a wide range of activities and sport contunuously proves one of most popular areas of student expereince, mainly due to the sheer number of opportunities to participate at varying levels. So whether you have played before, or there is a new sport you would like to try, through your college you will have the chance to join in and give it a go. Many of our students discover sporting abilities they never knew they had, simply through joining a college team, often progressing to play at University-level and beyond.

Durham's colleges have 650 teams, competing in 18 different sports

Community and Sport Development

With the focus on making sport accessible, we also provide access to a wide range of broader developmental opportunities, all of which create valuable real-life experience in a setting where students can make a difference.

Team Durham’s extensive Community Sport Development Programme offers coaching and outreach activities to schools and community groups. Our students also take part in National Governing Body officiating courses, developing their skills then going on to coach outside of the University and even on to professional coaching careers

For more information visit our Team Durham community outreach pages.

More than 200 Durham student volunteers are involved in over 40 sport outreach programmes taking place locally and regionally every year. Further afield, Team Durham has a long standing partnership with Sport in Action Zambia
